Installing GUI on Ubunutu Server

The following command can be used to install a GUI in Ubuntu Server.

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

The GUI comes with a lot of crud as well and it might take sometime to download if you have a slow connection.

I kept getting a security sandbox violation when i tried to test my code locally using Flex Builder 3. I did find a few posts out there but they were a bit vague in their details.

The full error string i was getting is :

I found a way to get a workaround around it. Its not great, but it works and thats what matters at the end.

You will basically have to add a parameter to the HTML wrapper for your Flex Code. …here are the steps:

1. Navigate the the output directory of your flex project e.g., C:\Documents and Settings\NQ\My Documents\Flex Builder 3\MyFlexProject\bin-debug.

2. Locate the HTML wrapper file which will have the same name as your project…in my case if was MyFlexProject.html

3. Open the HTML file in a text editor and locate the following tag :

You will see that there are other
tags in it as well.

Thats it, open up the file in a browser and Voilla…no sandox violations…

Flex 3: Remote Debugging

Before we go ahead, its important to note that if you have exported the project as a release to the remote site, forget about this article.Most of the time, developers like myself just copy the contents of the bin folder. If you follow the same practices as i do, this article is for you.

I had a painful experience while trying to find out Remote Debugging with Flex 3. Here’s some free and time saving steps:

In Flex Builder 3, navigate to Run>Debug> Other… or click on that bug icon and click on other.
In the Create, Manage and Run Configurations dialog that just opened up, either create a new configuration or keep the one that just opened up for you ( I’m assuming you were debugging the app locally on your PC before you decided to run remote debugging).
In the URL or Path to Launch section, uncheck the Use defaults checkbox.
In the debug, run and profile fields, add the location of the html file hosted on the remote server( Developers tend to point these to the swf file, it doesn’t work that way).
e.g., http://myDevServer:9080/myRemoteApp/index.html
Click on the apply button,close your eyes and click the debug button to start debugging your remote application.
